It’s made by simply crushing freshly cut sugar cane, extracting thejuice and heating it in a large vat. Once the juice is reduced to a rich, darksyrup, it is hand-paddled. Hand paddling cools and dries the syrup, creatingthe dry, porous granules we call Sucanat. Nothing is added and nothing istaken out! Wholesome Sweeteners Fairtrade Organic Sucanat is made from 100%certified organic sugar cane. Because Sucanat still contains all of the cane’snatural molasses, it has a deep brown colour and a distinct, natural molassesflavour that enhances many foods. It can be substituted for brown sugar in anyrecipe and it is especially good in chocolate-based recipes, baked goods, BBQsauces and marinades. Wholesome uses traditional methods: Fair Tradecertification includes a commitment to sustainable agriculture. In recentyears, unprecedented acreage has been converted from conventional agricultureto organic cultivation, reducing exposure to pesticides, herbicides andfungicides. From the seed stock to harvest, our sugar cane is cultivated andharvested by hand and grown without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides orherbicides. Wholesome’s cane fields are never burned. During the harvest, trimmings are allowed to stay where they fall, decomposing naturally, returning nutrients to the soil, helping protect topsoil and ground water andproviding habitat for wildlife. At the small mills in Costa Rica, Malawi andParaguay, our sweeteners are made simply and the spent sugar cane, calledbagasse, is often recycled as fuel to generate electricity for the mill andnearby villages. Deep in Southern Mexico’s jungles, honeybees browse on lushwildflowers without exposure to antibiotics or chemicals.
